Time to have some summer fun! But before you hit the pool, remember to Slip, Slap, and Slop.

Slip on protective clothing. There are a lot of fun, stylish UV protective clothing. The average white t shirt has a sun protective factor (SPF) of 8. This is far from the recommended SPF of 30. However, clothing is a key factor in sun protection when used with a sunscreen. Encourage your child to wear a shirt at all times.

Slap on a hat. Sunscreen is often under applied to the face and ears. A wide brim hat is ideal to protect these sensitive areas.

Slop on some sunscreen or sunblock. Choose a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher. Sunscreens are available in lotions, creams, and gels. Choose one that feels comfortable. For those with sensitive skin a sunblock is a better choice, as they contain inert chemicals such as titanium dioxide. In order to get maximum benefit from your sunscreen, apply at least one hour before going out and reapply every two hours. The average adult should apply one ounce of sunscreen to the entire body.

Now, get out and get active!
